Company Information: Fuji TV. The concept of "ryosai kenbo" or "good wife", is a very popular concept that is seen in films, as seen in films, especially Japanese films. I would argue that it is due to nationalism, this concept is being sold through television to portray Japan's "ideal wife". In an article written by David Cozy for the Japanese Times, he explains the phrase ""is a phrase that "describes a woman who has mastered the housewifely arts — cooking, sewing, household management — and devotes those skills and her energy to maintaining a husband in a fit condition for long days at the company, and to fostering children who, if boys will succeed academically, and if girls, will become, in their turn, good wives and wise mothers.

As time goes by, we see how this concept has brought forth different images of women and has caused oppression amongst women who feel they need to live up to this concept. A perfect example of is the Japanese drama series Hirugao also known as Love Affairs in the Afternoon.

This drama introduces and takes its audiences into the lives of three different women how this concept may or may not apply to them. The drama series Love Affairs in the Afternoon is the title itself. People are having love affairs that are taken place in the afternoon. The drama is about two women who became somewhat friends after one incident. This is when we are introduced to the first two housewives in the series.

The first housewife, Sawa, is a part — time cashier at a supermarket and is happily married so she thought. Rikako, the second housewife, has just recently moved into Sawa's neighborhood.

Rikako seems to have the perfect life with a successful husband, two daughters, and a beautiful home. Later on in the series, we are introduced to Noriko, who is the third wife. Noriko another housewife in this series is unlike Sawa and Rikako. Noriko is wife, however she is not a housewife.

Noriko holds a much higher position than Sawa and Rikako, seeing that she is more successful, occupation wise and education wise. Noriko is also the only one out of the three wives that does not have an affair, but her husband Kitano is the lover of Sawa.

Even though the concept that is being sold in Japanese film most of the time when it comes to women is the idea of the perfect wife, I feel as though the way this film treats these women is to show us this idea is just an idea. None of these women represented this concept. The camera expects us to base these women on this concept or role that they need to play which is what makes these three intriguing none of actually does.

We have Noriko who is the most successful and the least to be applied to the concept of "ryosai kenbo". In the series, we have three women who are expected to play a role but if we look into each of them, they all lack some parts of the definition given by David Cozy. The first wife we have is Sawa, who is unfulfilled and is childless.

It does not help when she has mother-in-law who is constantly nagging her about having children. The second wife is Rikako, whom at first one would think fits the concept but no.

I think she is the most fake because she is exactly what Anne Imamura would fit into what she meant when she said "image refers to appearances". Rikako is the fake image of a "ryosai kenbo". She puts up this persona that makes it look like she fits the role when really she is not. Noriko who I see as more of the modern woman, is an independent woman.
